Better option is to buy the cable latch assembly and be done with the problem.
With the metal handle sold at parts stores you will be able to open the door until the tiny tab mounting the handle to the door tears out.

I just got a 96 ford f350 cc and mine was in the same shape.
Driver and passenger sides are available.
Now there are some cc panels oem brand new on ebay but only in red blue and tan that i found under f350 door trim not door panels.

To fix the handle or the cable once you get the door panel off you should not have to remove any motors or anything to hard to remove.

As said the cable gets gummy.
Just remove your door panel and handle set the reinforcement plate in place and rivet it on.

Lot s of ford obs trucks and broncos develop cracks in the door s sheet metal over time which makes it impossible to properly mount the actual door handle mechanism.
The trim tool just pops under the panel to pry out the clips if you pull the panel off without them you can either break the pieces that hold the clip or you just have to remove the clips from the door with needle nose once the panel is off.
